Kaduna police clarify circumstances surrounding journalist Farida Isiak’s case

Kaduna State Police Address Concerns over Journalist’s Arrest

The Kaduna State Police Command has responded to allegations made by a media organization regarding the arrest and detention of Farida Isiak, a journalist with Nagarta Radio. The police characterized the publication as suggesting an effort to silence the media.

DSP Mansir Hassan, spokesman for the Kaduna State Police, issued a statement on Thursday clarifying the incident. He noted that the situation arose following a social media post by Isiak on her Facebook page, which contained remarks directed at the Nigeria Police Force, a specific police officer, and his family.

Details from the police indicate that the disagreement stemmed from a request made by the journalist. The police emphasized the need for an objective evaluation of the circumstances rather than framing them solely as an infringement on press freedom without a complete understanding of the situation.

In a gesture toward resolution, the Commissioner of Police personally intervened to facilitate a dialogue between the parties involved. The Command expressed concern over reports that criticize the police without verifying facts or seeking the Command’s input, warning that such coverage could lead to distorted portrayals of events and harm the reputations of those involved.

The police urged media organizations to adhere to journalistic principles of accuracy, fairness, and balance. They stressed the importance of thorough verification of allegations and providing all relevant parties a chance to respond prior to publication.

In their statement, the Kaduna State Police Command reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, upholding citizens’ constitutional rights, and fostering a professional relationship with the media. The police acknowledged the crucial role of the press in a democratic society, calling for responsible exercises of freedom of expression that respect the rights and reputations of others.

The Command assured its dedication to constructive engagement with media practitioners and other stakeholders to promote peace, security, and justice in Kaduna State.
