Conte dismisses reports of Man United takeover with Carrick’s job uncertain | Football

Conte Denies Negotiations for Manchester United Role

LONDON — Former Chelsea and Napoli coach Antonio Conte has stated that he is not in advanced talks to take over as manager at Manchester United. He dismissed reports claiming he demanded full control over the club as “unfounded.”

Conte, who previously managed Chelsea to a Premier League title and also led Tottenham Hotspur, was responding to speculation amid United’s struggles this season. The club currently sits 13th in the Premier League and 20th in the Champions League standings following a 4-1 defeat to the Italian side Como, which has intensified scrutiny of current manager Michael Carrick.

“My name has been linked with numerous clubs, but there are currently no negotiations at an advanced stage,” Conte said in a statement.

Reflecting on his time with Napoli, where he won Serie A in the 2024-25 season, he stated, “I will take the time I need to consider how and when to return to management.” He emphasized that any future decision would be made carefully, based on the right conditions.

Conte also addressed rumors regarding financial demands and management style. “These reports are unfounded, as there is currently no concrete basis for such assessments,” he said.

In a previous interview with The Athletic, Conte expressed a desire to manage a club that has “lost sight of their history” to help restore its former glory.

United’s recent defeat has extended their winless streak to seven games across all competitions. Team captain Bruno Fernandes commented on the team’s “mood of defeat” and criticized the tactics employed during the match, while Carrick later apologized for the performance.

Hurzeler Focused on Brighton Amid United Speculation

Brighton and Hove Albion manager Fabian Hurzeler, another candidate reportedly linked to the Manchester United position, reiterated his commitment to the Seagulls on Friday. The 33-year-old, who is England’s youngest top-flight manager, emphasized his focus on Brighton’s current season, where the team occupies third place in the Premier League.

“I have no time to think about these rumors because we play every three days,” Hurzeler said during a news conference. He expressed respect for Carrick and acknowledged the work he has done with United.

Brighton’s strong performances this season have led to speculation about Hurzeler as a potential successor to Carrick, should United opt for a managerial change this season, continuing a trend for the club. The Seagulls secured a 0-0 draw against Czech side Jablonec in the Europa League on Thursday, marking the end of their scoring streak.

Despite the positive start, Hurzeler stated there is still room for improvement among his players. “We had tough periods, we have good periods, but to build these kind of relationships, you need time, you need connections, and you don’t take these things for granted,” he said.

Brighton will face Liverpool on Sunday, continuing their pursuit of top-tier standing in the league.
