‘Where is the urgency?’ – Atiku’s aide challenges Tinubu over Taraba attack

Paul Ibe, the media aide to Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has issued a challenge to President Bola Tinubu regarding his administration’s handling of security issues. This follows a recent attack in Taraba State that resulted in the deaths of at least 40 individuals.
Ibe made his comments in a post on X, referencing an assurance from Tinubu during his election campaign on October 14 that governance would be a top priority. He argued that the effectiveness of this promise should be measured by the safety of Nigerian citizens, rather than the number of campaign rallies the President conducts.
Amnesty International has reported the attack on Binnari village in Karim Lamido Local Government Area on October 23 resulted in significant turmoil, with numerous shops looted, homes destroyed, and families displaced.
Ibe highlighted the juxtaposition of the All Progressives Congress (APC) flag-off campaign in Kaduna as residents in Binnari mourned those lost to the violence. He expressed that “condolences cannot substitute for protection,” and demanded immediate security measures, support for the affected families, and accountability for the perpetrators.
He emphasized the importance of prioritizing the safety of Nigerians, stating, “Attending fewer rallies is a scheduling decision. Protecting Nigerians is the test of leadership.” Ibe concluded his statement by directly addressing the President, asking, “Mr. President, where is the urgency to secure Nigerian lives?”
