Police arrest two masquerades over alleged assault, extortion in Akwa Ibom

A statement from the command’s spokesperson, DSP Timfon John, announced the arrests of two individuals on October 26, 2026, at approximately 6 p.m. The arrests occurred along the Ukana/Abak Highway during an operational show of force.
According to the statement, the suspects are identified as Ine Isong, 29, from Ukana Ikot Esoh Village, and Emmanuel Ekpenyong, 20, from Ikono Local Government Area. They were reportedly found in possession of Ekpo masquerade costumes, machetes, spears, and arrows.
Initial reports suggest that the suspects, along with others, had been terrorizing residents and extorting money from unsuspecting individuals. Witness accounts indicate that some innocent people, particularly women, were assaulted during these incidents.
The statement emphasized that investigations are currently ongoing. Commissioner of Police Baba Mohammed Azar reiterated the command’s stance against the misuse of cultural practices or masquerade activities to facilitate criminal behavior, intimidation, extortion, or violence.
“While respecting lawful cultural traditions, the command remains resolute in ensuring that no individual or group takes the law into their own hands or threatens the peace and security of residents,” the statement said.
