State Assemblies Approve Constitution Amendment for State Police
As of Wednesday, the push to amend the 1999 Constitution for the establishment of State Police has gained significant momentum, with 32 State Houses of Assembly transmitting their approvals to the National Assembly.
The proposed amendment has successfully passed through two-thirds of state assemblies, surpassing the required 24 states to advance in the legislative process. Currently, only four states have yet to endorse the measure: Katsina, Bauchi, Borno, and Niger.
With the endorsement of 32 states, the bill is expected to proceed to the next phase of the constitutional amendment process before it is presented for final assent by the President.
Supporters of the State Police initiative argue that it will enhance security measures by addressing issues such as banditry and kidnapping that have plagued various regions. In contrast, critics express concerns about the potential for misuse of power by state governors.
The following is a list of the 32 states that have approved the constitutional amendment: Abia, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bayelsa, Benue, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Ekiti, Enugu, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Lagos, Nasarawa, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Oyo, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe, and Zamfara.
