64 Katsina students hospitalised after schistosomiasis drugs

Hospitalization of Students Raises Concerns in Katsina State

BATAGARAWA, Katsina State — At least 64 students from Government Science Secondary School have been hospitalized after experiencing severe health complications linked to medication administered for schistosomiasis, a parasitic infection.

Reports indicate that many of the affected students showed symptoms such as vomiting, dizziness, and abdominal pain shortly after taking the medication. Some students were reportedly unconscious upon arrival at local medical facilities, necessitating urgent treatment.

The students were taken to several hospitals, including General Amadi Rimi Specialist Hospital, Katsina General Hospital, and Turai Yar’Adua Hospital for immediate care.

In a troubling development, allegations have surfaced claiming that some teachers physically assaulted students displaying illness symptoms, accusing them of feigning sickness. The specific circumstances surrounding these alleged incidents remain unclear, and there has been no immediate response from the Katsina State Government regarding the situation.

This incident has sparked widespread concern regarding the adequacy of medical supervision, the dosage of the medication given, and the actions of school authorities when students began showing potential signs of distress. Further investigation is anticipated as the situation unfolds.
