It makes no sense to compare Ghana’s movie industry to Nigeria’s – Majid Michel

In a recent interview with Y1079 FM Accra, filmmaker Michel discussed the population disparities between Nigeria and Ghana, suggesting that Nigeria’s larger population could contribute to a greater number of talented actors and filmmakers.
Michel criticized the practice of comparing the film industries of the two countries, calling such comparisons “stupid” and inherently unfair. “If you have 50 children and I have five, the likelihood of you having a higher number of doctors, criminals, or filmmakers is significantly greater,” he said.
He elaborated on the disparity, emphasizing that the abundance of filmmakers in Nigeria can be attributed to its much larger population. “Mathematically, it’s clear why they have more doctors than we do. The same logic applies to filmmakers,” he stated.
Michel further argued that comparisons with more established nations are also inappropriate. “In terms of leadership, we are still developing. There are countries with leadership experience spanning over 300 years that have built robust systems, and we are still catching up,” he said, underscoring the challenges faced by Ghana’s film industry in this context.
