Nigerian artistes can’t make serious money from music unless they’ve international hit – Magixx

Afrobeats singer Magixx emphasized the challenges faced by Nigerian artists in achieving financial success without producing a hit song that resonates internationally. During a recent episode of the Afrobeats Intelligence podcast, he explained the necessity for artists to consistently release successful tracks to maintain financial stability after their initial breakthrough.

Magixx shared that it took him two to three months of being signed to Mavin Records by music mogul Don Jazzy before he began to see any income from his music career. He noted that performance fees for artists are largely influenced by the number of hit songs they have released.

“Even when you get signed to a big record label, you first have to drop a song with international appeal before you start making serious money,” Magixx said. He described his early struggles, stating that even with a record deal, he faced difficulties managing his living expenses and family obligations.

“When I asked for financial assistance, people assumed that since I was signed to a major label, money shouldn’t be a problem for me,” he added.

Magixx also highlighted the pressure of maintaining a star image, which often involves expensive clothing and lifestyle choices. He noted that the financial rewards for a successful hit can be substantial; fees can range from N500,000 to N700,000 per show for a popular track, with potential increases to N1.5 million for subsequent hits.
