Woman allegedly poisons co-wife’s children in Niger

Local Woman Allegedly Poisons Co-Wife’s Children in Niger State

LAPAI, Niger State — Mariya Abdullahi has been accused of poisoning the children of her co-wife in the Takuti community after her own struggles with infertility.

Authorities report that the children, ages four and nine, ingested a substance believed to be poison from a cup given to them by Abdullahi. The incident occurred on Friday, when Abdullahi allegedly administered the substance after being urged to do so by a friend.

One of the children died shortly after consumption, while the other was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Wasiu Abiodun, spokesman for the Niger State Police Command, confirmed the details of the case on Saturday. He stated, “The suspect will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Minna for further investigation.”

According to Abiodun, police received a report on November 6 at around 6 a.m. that Abdullahi had given the suspected poison to her co-wife’s children. Responding officers found the children unconscious and quickly transported them to a nearby clinic. While one child did not survive, the other is reported to be recovering.

Abdullahi has been arrested and is currently undergoing questioning. Reports suggest she was motivated by her inability to have children with her husband. Plans are in place to move her to the State Criminal Investigation Department for prosecution.
