Barcelona Overcomes Early Deficit to Defeat Atletico Madrid 2-1, Maintains La Liga Lead

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Fermin Lopez scored two goals to help Barcelona come from behind and secure a 2-1 victory against Atletico Madrid on Saturday, extending their lead at the top of La Liga.

With the win, Barcelona now sits three points ahead of second-placed Real Madrid and five points clear of Atletico, who are currently in third, after 12 matches in the league.

Atletico struck first in the 10th minute when Giuliano Simeone found the back of the net with a close-range volley from a cross by Julian Alvarez. The home side, aiming for their eighth consecutive win, continued to apply pressure in the early stages of the match.

However, Lopez leveled the score just before halftime, capitalizing on a loose ball in the penalty area. His equalizer shifted the momentum in favor of Barcelona as they headed into the break.

In the 66th minute, Lopez added a second goal, receiving a precise pass from teammate Lamine Yamal before firing a first-time shot past Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak. This goal marked Barcelona’s fifth consecutive away league victory against Atletico, a first in club history.

“It was a very difficult match. The first half was tough, but we managed to come from behind and secure the win,” Lopez told La Liga TV after the match.

Lopez also acknowledged the importance of Yamal’s contribution to the second goal, stating, “Lamine has been very good. His pass for the second goal was half the goal itself. I’m very happy.”

Reflecting on the match, he said, “We wanted to go into the break as league leaders and get three points. The equalizer lifted a weight off our shoulders, and we had more control. We knew at halftime that we had to continue playing the way we finished the first half. I think the team produced an incredible second half, both defensively and offensively. We’re very happy.”
