NWFL sanctions Osun Babes FC over kit breach, walkover

NWFL Fines Osun Babes, Deducts Points for Match Non-fulfillment

The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) has imposed a ₦2.5 million fine and deducted three points from Osun Babes Football Club after the team failed to play its scheduled fixture against FC Robo Queens in Lagos.

On Thursday, the league announced that the match, which was set for Wednesday at Onikan Stadium, did not proceed due to Osun Babes’ failure to meet kit requirements. As the visiting team, Osun Babes did not provide an alternative jersey with properly displayed player names and numbers despite a confirmed colour clash with the home team.

As a result, league officials awarded a walkover to FC Robo Queens in accordance with competition regulations. NWFL Media Director Samuel Ahmadu stated that the club’s actions violated Article 10.3 of the league’s regulatory framework, which mandates visiting teams to wear their second-choice colors in the event of a kit conflict.

Additionally, Article 10.5 requires the away team to change jerseys if the home team is dressed in its registered first-choice colors. The NWFL noted that Osun Babes also breached Article 14.7 for failing to honor the fixture without a valid reason.

“The regulations stipulate that Osun Babes has been fined ₦1,000,000 for the jersey infraction and ₦1,500,000 for failing to fulfill the fixture, totaling ₦2,500,000,” the NWFL stated.

In emphasizing the importance of adherence to regulations, NWFL Chief Operating Officer Modupe Shabi reaffirmed the league’s commitment to professionalism and compliance.

“The NWFL remains dedicated to maintaining the highest standards. All clubs must fully meet their obligations to safeguard the integrity and credibility of the league,” Shabi said.

The league also reminded Premiership teams to strictly observe operational rules to prevent similar disciplinary actions in future matches.
