NPFL: Kwara United fined N9m, banished to Abeokuta

Kwara United Fined for Crowd Violence During Match Against Rivers United

ILORIN, Nigeria — The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has imposed a fine of 9 million naira on Kwara United following incidents of crowd violence during a rescheduled match against Rivers United.

Davidson Owumi, the Chief Operating Officer of the league, made the announcement in a statement on Thursday. He noted that Kwara United violated several provisions of the NPFL’s rules and regulations during the match held at the Rashidi Yekini Mainbowl Stadium on Wednesday.

Owumi’s report indicated that the club failed to provide adequate security, which allowed unauthorized individuals to access restricted areas. In addition, insufficient control over the behavior of its supporters led to harassment and injuries of match officials as well as staff members from Rivers United.

As part of the disciplinary measures, Kwara United will face a three-point and three-goal deduction for the assaults on match officials. The team will also be required to play its remaining home matches at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta.

Kwara United has 48 hours from the date of the notice to file an appeal against the sanctions.
