Channels TV cameraman Kani Ben buried in Adamawa

KANGING, Adamawa State — Kani Ben, a cameraman for Channels Television who succumbed to injuries sustained in a road accident, was laid to rest Saturday in his hometown of Kangling in the Girei Local Government Area.

Ben, 44, died on February 15, 2026, following a crash that occurred while he was on assignment to cover a project commissioning by the North East Development Commission (NEDC). Born on May 28, 1982, he was the sole fatality in the incident, which involved 14 individuals, including 13 journalists from various media organizations.

The accident transpired along the Yashi–Yelwan Duguri Road in the Alkaleri Local Government Area of Bauchi State. At the time, Ben and his colleagues were returning from a ceremony to hand over a Government Secondary School project in Yelwan Duguri to the state government. They were en route to commission the Bara Bridge, which connects Bauchi and Gombe States, when the accident occurred.

The injured journalists were initially taken to Yelwan Duguri Hospital and later transferred to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital and Bauchi Specialist Hospital for further treatment.

Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, who expressed condolences to Ben’s family and the media community during the burial, was represented by the Commissioner for Information, Usman Shehu Usman. The governor announced that Ben’s widow, Sarah, would receive automatic employment in the Bauchi State Civil Service.

Governor Mohammed had previously visited the injured journalists at the university hospital, ensuring they would receive adequate medical care. In a tribute, Mukhtar Gidado, the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, remembered Ben as a dedicated and professional broadcast journalist.

Rev. Cletus Dading, Bishop of the Lutheran Church of Christ in Nigeria, Abuja Diocese, also acknowledged the support extended by the Bauchi State Government to Ben’s family during this difficult time.
