This is where our democracy has reached – Peter Obi speaks after escaping assassination in Edo

Former Labour Party Presidential Candidate Escapes Assassination Attempt

LAGOS, Nigeria — Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate and Governor of Anambra State, has emerged unscathed from an assassination attempt that occurred on Tuesday in Edo State.

According to reports from DAILY POST, gunmen targeted Obi’s convoy while he was visiting the residence of former All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman John Odigie-Oyegun. The assailants opened fire, causing significant damage to the estate’s gate and several vehicles.

In a video following the incident, Obi condemned the violence, stating, “This is where our democracy has reached. A former governor, and you can see what happened in front of his house, where hoodlums came shooting. I assure you this cannot continue; we have a country, and we are a part of it. We cannot have terrorism and have officials in government terrorising the citizens.”

The incident took place shortly after Obi, Odigie-Oyegun, and other political figures attended the formal declaration of Barrister Olumide Akpata into the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Benin.

A video posted online captured the aftermath, revealing visible bullet holes on the estate’s gate and evidence of damage to nearby vehicles. Yunusa Tanko, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, reported that the attackers had trailed the group from the ADC Secretariat to Odigie-Oyegun’s residence before launching their assault.

Tanko described the incident as a failed assassination attempt aimed at political leaders, underscoring the escalating threat of violence in the country’s political landscape.
