Wike, Rivers lawmakers meet Fubara

By Davies Iheamnachor, Port Harcourt

Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, convened a closed-door meeting Sunday evening with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, accompanied by members of the Rivers State House of Assembly and local government chairmen.

The meeting took place at Fubara’s residence in Port Harcourt. The agenda for the discussions has not been disclosed, marking it as the first time Wike and members of the assembly have visited the governor in this setting.

Wike’s delegation included the state assembly’s Speaker, Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule, and Kingsley Chinda, the All Progressives Congress candidate for the 2027 general elections, alongside all 23 local government chairmen and other members of the Rainbow Coalition.

This meeting follows a prior engagement weeks earlier, where Wike and members of the Rainbow Coalition, including Chinda, met with Fubara to discuss similar issues. Sources indicated that the Sunday meeting is part of ongoing reconciliation efforts between Wike and Fubara’s supporters, aimed at resolving the political tensions that have affected the state.

The gathering seeks to establish a more collaborative political environment, particularly in light of the past conflicts, including multiple attempts by lawmakers to impeach Fubara amid significant political unrest. The situation escalated before President Bola Tinubu intervened, declaring a state of emergency.

Despite this move towards reconciliation, Wike has previously ruled out a second term for Fubara, designating the party’s ticket to Chinda. As the 2027 elections approach, Wike appears to be working to unify the leaders from both political factions within the state.

Following the meeting, attendees, including Wike and Fubara, were seen smiling and exchanging greetings, reflecting a cautious optimism about the future of their political alliance.
