Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi Declined Spanish National Team Offer

Lionel Messi, captain of Inter Miami, disclosed in a recent podcast interview that he turned down an opportunity to play for the Spanish national team during his early career.

Speaking on the “Miro de Atras” podcast, Messi, now 39, said he was approached about representing Spain while he was developing at Barcelona. However, the soccer star emphasized that his aspiration has always been to don the colors of Argentina.

Messi left Argentina for Barcelona’s youth academy as a child. He noted, “There was a moment when something was mentioned from Spain. I’d been in Barcelona since I was very young, so it wasn’t strange. But my desire was always to play for Argentina.”
