Investigation begins into death of Chimamanda Adichie’s son

Coroner’s Inquest Scheduled into Death of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Son

LAGOS – The Lagos State Judiciary has announced that a coroner’s inquest into the death of 21-month-old Nkanu, son of noted Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, will begin on April 14, 2026.

Nkanu passed away on January 7, 2026, due to complications arising from a series of medical procedures. Following the incident, the family filed a legal notice against the hospital involved, alleging medical negligence and professional misconduct contributed to the child’s death.

The inquest date was set by Magistrate Atinuke Adetunji during a preliminary appearance by legal representatives for all parties involved. Kemi Pinheiro represented the Adichie family, while Adebola Rahman acted on behalf of the Lagos State Attorney-General. Attorneys for Atlantis Hospital and Euracare were also present.

Magistrate Adetunji noted that the inquest was initiated at the request of the Attorney-General, emphasizing the government’s interest in a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death. “The Lagos State Government is also bereaved; that is why the Attorney-General has taken this step. It is not just the family of the deceased that is affected,” she stated.

The court directed all parties to file and exchange witness statements prior to the hearing. The primary aim of the proceedings is to ascertain the exact cause of death, starting with the presentation of autopsy findings.

Counsel for the Adichie family indicated their intent to present evidence of alleged gross medical negligence, including claims of possible overdose, wrongful prescription, improper administration of propofol, and misdiagnosis. The family plans to call five independent medical experts as witnesses, along with the child’s father, who is a medical doctor.

Euracare will open its case at the inquest’s commencement, followed by the Adichie family and then Atlantis Hospital. The matter is adjourned until April 14 for the formal start of proceedings.
