UAE tennis tournament suspended after drone interception sparks fire | Israel-Iran conflict News

Fujairah Challenger Tournament Suspended Due to Security Alert

Fujairah, UAE — The ATP Challenger tennis tournament in Fujairah was abruptly halted on Tuesday following a security alert associated with Iranian strikes on targets in the Gulf region. This escalation was reportedly a response to attacks by the United States and Israel.

Debris from the interception of a drone resulted in a fire at an oilfield approximately 15 kilometers (nine miles) from the tournament site on the UAE’s eastern Gulf coast. As a precautionary measure, officials suspended play and ultimately cancelled all matches for the remainder of the day.

“The decision to cancel play was made in consultation with local authorities and security advisers,” the ATP stated.

Video footage shared on social media captured Belarusian player Daniil Ostapenkov and Japan’s Hayato Matsuoka seeking shelter following an announcement regarding the situation. Ukrainian player Vladyslav Orlov, who had just completed his match, expressed concern on Instagram, noting the sounds of jets overhead and smoke visible in the vicinity.

Iran has launched missiles and drones targeting multiple nations across the Middle East in response to recent US-Israeli attacks, which have reportedly resulted in over 787 casualties in Iran since Saturday, according to the Iranian Red Crescent Society. Iranian attacks have increasingly focused on oil and gas infrastructure, raising concerns about potential disruptions to global energy markets.

The UAE government condemned the Iranian attacks, describing them as “blatant aggression” and a violation of national sovereignty and international law. The UAE’s Defense Ministry reported that since February 28, it had intercepted 186 Iranian missiles, with the majority being destroyed. They stated that three fatalities have occurred in the UAE as a direct result of these attacks, alongside 68 reported injuries.

“The Ministry affirms the UAE’s right to respond to this escalation and to take all necessary measures to safeguard its territory and protect its national interests,” a ministry representative stated.

As the situation develops, authorities remain vigilant in monitoring and responding to ongoing threats to regional security.
