Two Nigerian Railway Corporation Employees Arrested for Assaulting University Lecturer

IBADAN, Nigeria — Two employees of the Nigerian Railway Corporation have been arrested for allegedly assaulting a lecturer from the Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the University of Ibadan, Mikail Abdulsalam.

The arrests occurred on Wednesday at the Moniya Division of the Oyo State Police Command. A third suspect is reported to have fled the scene.

Witnesses reported that tensions escalated during the early hours of Wednesday at the Obafemi Awolowo Railway Station in Moniya when Abdulsalam was attacked shortly after dropping off his sister, who was traveling to Lagos by train.

Sources say that although Abdulsalam tried to remain calm, he was subjected to harassment and physical assault by the NRC employees.

Following the incident, the matter was reported to the Nigeria Police Force at the Moniya Division. Abdulsalam later confirmed to reporters that he sustained various injuries from the assault and that police were conducting an investigation.

Olayinka Ayanlade, the Public Relations Officer for the state police command, confirmed the arrests while speaking with reporters. “Two suspects are in custody. The third suspect fled the scene,” he stated.

The incident has raised concerns among the public about safety and conduct at the railway station.
