ABUJA — Twelve states in Nigeria have enacted a tax harmonization law as part of a wider tax reform initiative introduced by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms and Minister of State for Finance designate, delivered this update during a briefing in Abuja on Wednesday. He noted that an additional 13 states have proposed similar legislation, currently under consideration by their respective state legislatures. Other states are at various stages of implementing the reforms.
Oyedele emphasized that these tax reforms aim to modernize Nigeria’s fiscal framework, facilitate business growth, protect vulnerable populations, and readjust the country’s economic structure.
“The harmonization law seeks to eliminate nuisance taxes and protect citizens from harassment under any guise,” he said. “It will simplify the tax system, safeguard taxpayers’ rights, and address instances of unfair tax treatment.”
He further underscored that transparency, fiscal discipline, responsibility, and accountability are essential components of an effective tax system.
