Lecturers at Imo State University Refuse to Grade Exams During Ongoing Strike
Imo State University (IMSU) lecturers announced they will not evaluate or grade the exam papers of students participating in examinations conducted during the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
Stephen Oguji, chairperson of the IMSU branch of ASUU, made the announcement in a statement to journalists on Saturday in Owerri. He emphasized the union’s commitment to maintaining academic integrity, stating that the current examinations lack proper oversight and should not involve grading by lecturers who are on strike.
Oguji expressed concern for the students, stating, “We do not wish students to jeopardize their examinations. We do not want them to lose their academic session. Most importantly, we do not want them to graduate through a process whose credibility may later be questioned.”
He clarified that the lecturers responsible for instruction and assessment are not engaged in the ongoing examinations, which were not designed by them.
In his message to students, Oguji urged them to ally with the union in calling for the Imo State Government to honor the Federal Government-ASUU agreement on university funding set to be fully implemented by 2025. He reassured students that their true adversaries are not their lecturers but those in authority who have the power to resolve the issues underlying the strike.
Oguji stated further, “Therefore, instead of opposing your lecturers, join forces with us. Engage with those who possess the authority to resolve this crisis. Urge the government to implement the agreement and bring an end to the strike.”
He reaffirmed that lecturers are eager to return to the classroom and conduct examinations that uphold the dignity and legitimacy of the educational process. Oguji called on relevant authorities to fulfill the agreement aimed at improving working conditions for lecturers.
