Discharging waste into Aba River now big offence – Otti warns companies

Governor Otti Outlines Plans for Aba River Dredging and Waste Management Enforcement
UMUAHIA, Abia State — Abia State Governor Otti announced a comprehensive plan to dredge the Aba River to ensure a free flow of water. This initiative aims to address longstanding issues related to river pollution and water accessibility.
During a press briefing at the Government House in Umuahia, Governor Otti emphasized the seriousness of industrial waste management. He made it clear that any company found discharging industrial waste into the river would face strict penalties for polluting the water supply.
“It is now an offense that is punishable,” Otti stated. He highlighted the need for companies to implement appropriate waste treatment measures, particularly when local communities rely on the river for drinking water.
Otti noted that his administration has already engaged with a company that has been found discharging waste into the river, discussing the potential consequences of their actions. His administration continues to seek solutions that prioritize both environmental health and community safety.
