Two Teenagers Die After Falling into Pond in Kano State
KANO, Nigeria — Two teenagers tragically lost their lives after falling into a pond in Kano State while allegedly fleeing from suspected phone snatchers. The Kano State Fire Service confirmed the incident in a statement released on Tuesday.
The incident occurred on Friday, March 6, 2026, around 4:04 p.m. at Ring Road Kureken Sani in the Kumbotso Local Government Area. An emergency call was made by a local resident, identified as Muhd Abba, prompting the Fire Service’s Emergency Response Unit to dispatch a rescue team.
Upon arrival, responders discovered the bodies of two 18-year-olds, Sadiq Isyaku and Auwal Isyaku, who had fallen into the water. According to the fire service, the victims were retrieved unconscious and later confirmed dead. Their bodies were subsequently handed over to their father, Ibrahim Shehu, from Unguwa Uku Quarters.
Preliminary reports indicated that the teenagers fell into the pond while attempting to escape from individuals they believed were pursuing them for their mobile phones.
In a related event, the fire service reported the successful rescue of a man who fell into a well in Kano Municipal. The emergency call for this incident was received on Monday, March 9, 2026, around 7:12 p.m. from Abdullahi Aminu, who reported the fall at Durumin Zungura by Assahabul Khahafi.
The rescue team, mobilized from the agency’s headquarters, located the man, identified as 40-year-old Shitu Balarabe, inside the well. He was retrieved alive and handed over to his brother, Jamilu Balarabe, from Durumin Zungura.
The Kano State Fire Service extended its condolences to the families affected by both incidents. It also urged the public to take necessary precautions to prevent similar tragedies, emphasizing the need for children and youth to stay away from open water and the importance of constructing protective barriers for wells.
