How women can make society thrive – Peter Obi

Former Labour Candidate Highlights Importance of Women’s Empowerment at Conference

Banjul, The Gambia — Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate for the Labour Party in Nigeria, stressed the crucial role of women’s empowerment in driving societal progress. Speaking at the REFELA National Conference on Tuesday, Obi advocated for equal access to education, finance, and leadership opportunities for women.

The conference, themed “Accelerating Representation, Safeguarding, and Strengthening Women’s Rights,” coincided with this year’s International Women’s Day, which carries the slogan “Give to Gain.”

Obi, who previously served as governor of Anambra State, noted that the prosperity of nations is closely linked to the investments made in their people, particularly women. He asserted that countries that prioritize human capital development tend to achieve more robust economies and stable societies.

“When women are given equal access to education, finance, and leadership opportunities, they become not just participants but critical drivers of national development,” Obi said. He called for African nations, including Nigeria and The Gambia, to make “aggressive, deliberate, and strategic investments” in human capital.

Obi highlighted the necessity of prioritizing education, healthcare, skills development, and economic inclusion for both women and youth as foundational elements for sustainable growth and development in any nation.
