Bandits kill three soldiers, seven vigilantes in Plateau

Bandit Attack in Plateau State Claims Lives of Soldiers and Vigilantes

WANKA, Plateau State – A violent attack by suspected bandits in the Wanka community of the Keram District resulted in the deaths of three soldiers and seven local vigilantes on Friday. The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. when armed assailants invaded the village, unleashing gunfire that created panic among residents.

Reports indicate that several bandits also died during the confrontation. A community source told DAILY POST that two army captains were among the military personnel killed in the attack.

Prior to this incident, community members had reportedly coexisted with the bandits, who had maintained a presence in the area without driving residents away. On Friday morning, a contingent of security personnel, led by the two captains, engaged the bandits in an effort to reclaim control of the community, resulting in the deaths of several assailants while forcing others to flee.

However, just hours later, the bandits regrouped from nearby bushland and launched a second attack against the soldiers and their vigilante allies. This led to casualties on both sides and further loss of life among the bandits. The poorly defined engagement lasted several minutes, and it remains unclear if any civilians were harmed in the crossfire.

Captain Polycap Oteh, spokesperson for Operation Enduring Peace, could not be reached for comment at press time.

The Wase and Kanam areas, which share a border, have experienced a pattern of bandit attacks in recent months, raising concerns among local residents and authorities.
