City Boy Movement Addresses Looting Incident at Sensitization Rally in Owerri
The leadership of the City Boy Movement, a support group for President Bola Tinubu, has issued a statement regarding the looting of palliative materials during its recent rally in Owerri, Imo State, on Saturday.
The event, intended to distribute items such as food, mobile phones, sewing machines, and grinders to community members, quickly turned chaotic as attendees surged forward to collect the supplies, resulting in a stampede.
Critics have attributed this unrest to widespread hunger in the country, which has intensified during President Tinubu’s administration. In response, Chief Obinna Iyiegbu, popularly known as Obi Cubana and leader of the City Boy Movement, contended that the looters were likely outsiders aiming to disrupt the event.
Chief Uche Nworah, the movement’s spokesperson in the South-East, emphasized that while the chaos was unfortunate, it should not overshadow the goals of the initiative, which sought to empower youth and support vulnerable populations across the five South-Eastern states.
“The Renewed Hope National Tour and the City Boy Movement South-East Youth Tour and Empowerment Programme, which officially commenced on March 14, 2026, at Heroes Square in Owerri, was progressing smoothly until the disruption occurred,” Nworah stated.
He detailed that the empowerment items targeted beneficiaries from Abia, Anambra, Imo, Ebonyi, and Enugu states and included various resources such as shuttle buses, sewing machines, deep freezers, grinding machines, wheelchairs for individuals with disabilities, smartphones, generator sets, laptops, cash grants, farming kits, and hair salon equipment.
Nworah confirmed that he witnessed the incident, expressing disappointment at the negative interpretations circulating in the media. “It is quite unfortunate to see the negative spin being given to the incident in some quarters,” he said.
