Abiodun signals return of OKLNG, unveils bigger vision for Ogun waterside

Ogun State Governor Announces Revival of Olokola LNG Project

Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun has announced plans to revive the long-stalled Olokola Liquefied Natural Gas (OKLNG) project, signaling a significant economic transformation for Ogun Waterside Local Government. Abiodun made this declaration on Friday during the commissioning of the newly reconstructed Gao-Ibiade Road, emphasizing the project’s potential to position the region as Nigeria’s next industrial and maritime hub.

Abiodun stated that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has informed the state government of its intention to move forward with the multi-billion-dollar OKLNG project, which has remained dormant for years. He described this initiative as a strategic investment aimed at preparing the area for an anticipated increase in industrial, commercial, and maritime activities.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to establishing the proposed Ogun Deep Sea Port, assuring residents that progress is being made toward creating one of Africa’s key maritime infrastructure projects. He highlighted that recent discoveries of premium-grade crude oil in the area have bolstered Ogun Waterside’s investment prospects, with plans for a refinery, deep seaport, naval base, and dockyard expected to significantly enhance the region’s role as a major oil, gas, and logistics hub.

Recognizing the importance of infrastructure, Abiodun pointed to the reconstruction of the Gao-Ibiade Road as vital for supporting the expected economic growth. He noted that improved road connectivity would facilitate investments and provide greater access to coastal communities.

“We are preparing for the imminent explosion of economic activities in this local government area. Ogun Waterside is a jewel that must be fully tapped,” the governor said.

Abiodun emphasized that, despite significant infrastructure developments throughout Ogun State in recent years, his administration remains committed to ensuring equitable distribution of development benefits across all 20 local government areas. He announced that reconstruction efforts will soon extend to the J4-Gao Road, further enhancing access to Abigi, the headquarters of Ogun Waterside Local Government.

Recalling the region’s history of poor infrastructure, Abiodun expressed satisfaction with its steady emergence as a strategic investment destination poised to drive economic growth in Ogun State and Nigeria as a whole.

Engineers involved in the Gao-Ibiade Road project, including Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure Engr. Ade Akinsanya, noted that the road had long been in disrepair. He assured residents that the reconstruction was executed to high standards to stimulate economic activity and improve connectivity.

Local representatives also praised the governor’s initiatives. Hon. Joseph Adegbesan, who represents Ijebu North, Ijebu East, and Ogun Waterside in the House of Representatives, commended the governor’s efforts and called for further road improvements to unlock the area’s economic potential. Likewise, Hon. Shamsideen Adekunle Lawal, representing Ogun Waterside in the Ogun State House of Assembly, noted that infrastructure projects, including the Deep Sea Port and Naval Base, are already underway and oil exploration activities have commenced in the region.
