Adamawa residents picket YEDC headquarters, demand improved power supply
Protest at Yola Electricity Distribution Company Grounds Operations
YOLA, Adamawa State — Protesters blocked access to the Yola Electricity Distribution Company (YEDC) headquarters on Tuesday, disrupting operations and preventing both employees and customers from entering the facility.
The demonstrators, residents from Girei and Song local government areas, expressed their frustrations over a prolonged power outage that has persisted for over two months.
The blockade prevented the company’s staff from reaching the office, effectively bringing operations to a standstill.
Residents voiced their concerns, stating that despite multiple meetings with YEDC officials and local community leaders, the company has failed to restore electricity. They alleged that the promises made by YEDC during these engagements did not yield any results.
The protesters pledged to continue their demonstration until electricity supply is restored to their communities, emphasizing the severe impact of the outage on local businesses, healthcare services, and daily activities for students and artisans.
“We have lost confidence in YEDC’s ability to provide reliable electricity,” a protester stated. “We are calling for the revocation of the company’s distribution license. The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, the Adamawa State Government, and other relevant authorities must act urgently to ensure the restoration of power.”
As of this report, YEDC had not released an official statement regarding the protest. Security personnel were deployed to the area to monitor the situation and maintain order.
