Adelabu to resign as power minister

Minister of Power to Resign, Aims for Governorship

Abuja – Adebayo Adelabu, Nigeria’s Minister of Power, is expected to resign from his position in the coming days to pursue a governorship ambition, according to Tunji Bolaji, Special Adviser on Strategic Communications and Media Relations to the minister.

Bolaji announced the anticipated resignation during a statement on Wednesday, detailing Adelabu’s discussions with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa on Tuesday. During the meeting, Adelabu presented a comprehensive report on his performance in the power sector over the past two and a half years.

The president expressed his appreciation for the minister’s dedication and the progress made in laying a strong policy foundation intended to transform the power sector. President Tinubu also granted approval for Adelabu to pursue his governorship aspirations.

In the statement, Bolaji highlighted several milestones achieved under Adelabu’s leadership, including initiatives aimed at stabilizing electricity generation and strengthening the country’s transmission capacity. He also noted ongoing reforms designed to improve efficiency and service delivery throughout the electricity sector.

Central to the discussions was the presentation of the National Integrated Electricity Policy (NIEP) and its accompanying Strategic Implementation Plan (SIP). The NIEP offers a long-term framework aimed at developing Nigeria’s electricity sector sustainably. It outlines objectives for achieving energy security, expanding electricity access, integrating renewable energy, and fostering a more resilient power sector.

The SIP functions as the operational guide for the NIEP, detailing specific actions, timelines, and institutional responsibilities necessary to achieve set policy goals. Key areas of focus include generation, transmission, and distribution, along with regulatory reforms, investment mobilization, and capacity development.

Furthermore, Bolaji remarked that the minister emphasized efforts to stabilize the sector amid recent challenges, including declines in power generation due to gas supply issues, ongoing repairs to pipelines, and outstanding obligations to gas suppliers.

Adelabu expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his unwavering support and reaffirmed his commitment to advancing Nigeria’s power sector and contributing to the nation’s overall development.
