Afrobeats now more lucrative but relationship amongst artists has deteriorated – Davido

Afrobeats artist David Adeleke, known as Davido, has shared his insights regarding the current dynamics of the Nigerian music industry.

In a recent episode of the Uncut Podcast, Davido discussed the financial growth of Afrobeats, stating it has become more profitable over the years. However, he expressed concern over the decline in camaraderie among artists within the genre.

Recalling the collaborative spirit of the early 2010s, Davido noted that he often worked alongside colleagues in the studio during the creation of his breakout single, “Dami Duro.” He highlighted a shift in the industry’s atmosphere, attributing it to the rise in wealth and global recognition of Afrobeats artists.

“Financially, it is a great time doing Afrobeats, but the relationship amongst artists is a failure,” Davido stated. He contrasted the current landscape with the years 2012 and 2013, when artists frequently socialized and supported one another. “When I recorded ‘Dami Duro,’ Wande Coal and a lot of artists were in the studio with me, but now there is no such thing anymore,” he added.
