‘Always display name tag on your uniform’ – IGP orders officers, gives update on state police

Inspector General of Police Orders Name Tags for Identification

The Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, has mandated that all police personnel wear visible name tags while on duty to facilitate easy identification. The directive, announced on Tuesday, specifies that only officers operating undercover are exempt from this requirement.

During the announcement, Disu emphasized the importance of accountability, stating, “All police officers should have their name tags. Everyone in leadership positions, including all the Commissioners of Police, displays their names, with the exception of undercover personnel.”

Disu convened a meeting with the Commissioners of Police to address several operational matters, reiterating that incidents occurring within their jurisdictions remain under their control.

In addition, the Inspector General spoke on the proposed establishment of state police by the federal government. He noted the federal police’s initiative to outline their perspective on how state police should be structured. “We have conducted extensive comparative analysis which has been forwarded to the National Assembly,” Disu said, underscoring the careful consideration given to the issue.
