Youth Development Minister Ayodele Wisdom Olawande Discusses Economic Reforms and Youth Empowerment

In an interview, Comrade Ayodele Wisdom Olawande, the Minister of Youth Development, addressed the priorities of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, focusing on economic reforms, infrastructure development, and youth empowerment. He acknowledged the challenges posed by ongoing reforms but emphasized the administration’s commitment to creating a sustainable economy and job opportunities. Olawande also expressed optimism about the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming 2027 elections, asserting that the party can succeed if it continues to fulfill its promises.

When asked to assess President Tinubu’s administration, Olawande remarked that evaluating a government is subjective and depends on individual perspectives. He pointed out that the president assumed office during a particularly challenging period for Nigeria. “No one should promise that things will be easy,” he stated, recalling remarks from the Emir of Kano that underscored the necessity of dedication and strong leadership.

Olawande highlighted the administration’s bold measures aimed at resolving long-standing economic issues. He noted significant infrastructure improvements across the country, particularly in the Federal Capital Territory. “If you compare Abuja three or four years ago to today, the progress is evident,” he said, also mentioning various infrastructure projects, including the Lagos-Calabar coastal road.

Regarding the recent removal of fuel subsidies, Olawande asserted that the benefits are already visible, especially for the youth. He emphasized that there have been no disruptions in educational schedules due to ASUU strikes for three consecutive years, marking a significant achievement in youth development. He also highlighted a shift toward diversified energy solutions as part of the administration’s commitment to economic reform.

Acknowledging the hardships resulting from these reforms, he likened them to the pains of childbirth, suggesting that meaningful change often requires difficult adjustments. “What matters,” he said, “is that the government continues to support citizens during this transition.”

On the topic of the APC’s prospects in the 2027 elections, Olawande asserted that the electorate will consider the challenges the government has navigated and assess the visible progress made. “If the president secures a second term, it could provide more direct benefits for Nigerians,” he added.

Olawande believes the current administration has made strides in prioritizing youth needs, linking its success to stability in the education system. He pointed to programs like the Nigerian Entrepreneurship Fund (NELFUND) and various initiatives aimed at enhancing skills development.

Nevertheless, he acknowledged that more work is needed to further empower the youth. “Our focus is to create real opportunities for Nigerian youth,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that young people have stable prospects at home rather than feeling compelled to seek opportunities abroad.

When asked about employment statistics under the current administration, Olawande noted the complexity of measuring job gains, which often arise from public-private partnerships rather than direct government employment. He emphasized the need for a multifaceted approach to youth employment, integrating support from various sectors.

To enhance youth empowerment, Olawande stressed the administration’s commitment to skill development that links young individuals with the private sector. His ministry aims to ensure that every youth develops multiple competencies.

He also highlighted the collaborative efforts between his ministry, the National Directorate of Employment, and the Ministry of Labour to align employment strategies with the president’s reforms.

As the general elections approach, Olawande encouraged youth engagement in the democratic process, urging them to acquire voter cards, participate actively, and demand accountability from their leaders. He expressed confidence in the capabilities of Nigerian youth, describing them as resourceful and resilient.

In conclusion, Olawande’s insights reflect the current administration’s approach to addressing the economic challenges facing Nigeria while prioritizing the development of its youth.
