Bandits kill Niger monarch, sibling of Tinubu’s agriculture minister

Suspected bandits attacked the palace of the Village Head of Galla in Borgu Emirate, Niger State, on Monday, August 24, 2026, leading to the death of the traditional ruler.

Sources indicate that the attack was in retaliation for a warning issued by the village chief, urging the bandits to refrain from encroaching on his community. This warning reportedly angered the assailants, who subsequently targeted him in his residence.

The deceased has been identified as the brother of Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security.

The Niger State Police Command’s spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, stated he would provide additional details regarding the incident but had not yet issued an official statement at the time of publication.

This incident has heightened concerns about the security situation in Borgu Emirate, which has seen an increase in banditry and related threats in recent months.
