High Court in Maiduguri Sentences Woman for Human Trafficking
A High Court in Maiduguri, Borno State, has sentenced 33-year-old Salamatu Saidu to five years in prison for human trafficking offenses. The decision was announced by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) in a statement on its verified Facebook page on Thursday.
Justice Bukar M. Umar presided over the case and found Saidu guilty of fraudulent entry of persons, violating Section 26(2) of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act of 2015. The court’s ruling revealed that the defendant was involved in the illegal movement of two victims, aged 21 and 33, through deceptive means.
Saidu was arraigned on April 20, 2023, and convicted on the same day after the court established her involvement in the crime. Following the conviction, the court imposed a five-year prison sentence.
In light of this case, NAPTIP has called on the public to remain alert and report any suspicious activities, as authorities step up efforts to combat human trafficking in the region.
