Bridge Head Violence: Injured traders discharged, CP orders investigation into midnight raids
Four traders who were injured during a shooting incident at the Bridge Head drug market in Onitsha last week have been discharged from the hospital.
The violence erupted when a man, allegedly transporting drugs for waybill purposes, attempted to flee from police. Supporters of the suspect reportedly attacked a security officer in an effort to protect him, resulting in injuries to bystanders.
Anambra State Commissioner of Police Nnanna Oji Ama visited the scene to help de-escalate the situation and committed to providing care for six individuals injured during the altercation. According to reports, four of those individuals have been released from medical care, while two remain hospitalized under the supervision of the Police Area Command in Onitsha, led by Assistant Commissioner of Police Tope Fasugba.
A police source noted the financial impact of the incident on the area command, praising Commissioner Oji Ama and ACP Fasugba for their commitment to the welfare of the victims. The source clarified that the conflict was not a confrontation between police and traders but rather instigated by local thugs.
In the wake of the incident, Commissioner Oji Ama has ordered a full investigation into allegations of midnight police raids at the market. Reports have surfaced claiming that officers were conducting arbitrary raids and confiscating goods. Police Public Relations Officer Tochukwu Ikenga stated that the Commissioner takes these claims seriously and has instructed an inquiry into the specific allegations against certain officers.
However, a police source contesting the validity of these reports expressed contentment with the decision to initiate an investigation. The source suggested that individuals promoting the allegations are attempting to undermine ACP Fasugba, who has been actively combating drug trafficking in the area.
