Bus passenger slumps, dies in Calabar

Calabar Woman Dies After Collapsing on Bus
A Calabar woman identified as Mrs. Afiong Peters collapsed and died Saturday night while traveling on a commercial bus.
The circumstances surrounding her sudden collapse remain unclear. Passengers speculated that she might have been experiencing stress or underlying health issues.
The Cross River State Police Command has confirmed the incident. In a statement released by ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, the Public Relations Officer, the police reported that Peters suffered a medical emergency on the evening of July 11, 2026.
According to preliminary findings, at approximately 11:30 p.m., the driver of the mini bus, Mr. John Okon John, notified Atakpa Police Station that while transporting eight passengers from Watt Roundabout towards the Edgerly–Mbukpa–Afukam area, one passenger requested to exit at a stop on Edgerly Road.
As Peters attempted to exit the vehicle, she suddenly sat down on the ground, became unresponsive, and was unable to speak. Fellow passengers promptly assisted her back into the bus, and she was rushed to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital for emergency care. However, hospital personnel confirmed her death shortly after arrival.
Akata added that Peters’ family has been located and notified of her passing, and they are currently making arrangements for the preservation of her remains.
