CAF president, Motsepe explains how Infantino can be removed from FIFA
Patrice Motsepe, the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and a vice president of FIFA, has stated that Gianni Infantino can only be removed from his position as FIFA president through an electoral process.
Motsepe’s comments come amid mounting criticism from UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), and CONCACAF. These organizations have accused Infantino, who is 56 years old, of “deception” related to his failed proposal to sell stakes in the World Cup to investors. Consequently, they are demanding his resignation and assert that he should not seek re-election in March 2024.
In an interview with Sky News, Motsepe emphasized the importance of following proper procedures when addressing grievances within FIFA. “If anybody has got any problem against anybody, whether it’s Gianni, whether it’s anybody else, follow the process, follow the FIFA process, simple as that,” he said. He stressed that the decision to remove Infantino should be left to the 211 member associations through a democratic election process.
Motsepe urged caution, noting the upcoming elections scheduled for next year. “Shouldn’t we allow that process to continue?” he asked, reinforcing the importance of due process in organizational governance.
