Leipzig Car Incident Leaves Two Dead, Driver Arrested

LEIPZIG, Germany (AP) — A vehicle drove into a crowd in the eastern German city of Leipzig on Saturday, resulting in the deaths of at least two individuals. Authorities reported that the driver has been taken into custody and is no longer deemed a threat to public safety.

Emergency services labeled the situation a mass casualty incident, as reports indicated that approximately 20 people were affected. The incident occurred on Grimmaische Strasse, a street that connects to the city’s commercial district.

Leipzig Mayor Burkhard Jung addressed the media at the scene, stating, “We don’t know the motivation. We don’t know anything about the culprit.” Details regarding the driver’s identity and possible motives have not been disclosed.

Witness accounts cited by Radio Leipzig described a damaged Volkswagen SUV seen speeding through a pedestrian area just before the incident. Eyewitnesses also reported several covered bodies at the scene, along with a victim suffering from stab wounds.

As one of the largest cities in eastern Germany, Leipzig has a population of approximately 630,000. In recent years, Germany has experienced a series of car-ramming and stabbing attacks, some of which have been linked to political or religious motivations, while others involved individuals with mental health issues.

This incident follows a troubling trend in the country; last year, two people died in a car attack on a group of pedestrians in Mannheim. Earlier, a similar attack at a trade union demonstration in Munich resulted in two fatalities and over 40 injuries, including many children. Additionally, in December 2024, multiple casualties occurred during a car-ramming at a Christmas market in Magdeburg, shortly after a stabbing incident at a festival in Solingen.

The investigation into the Leipzig incident is ongoing.
