Clear drainages, heed flood warnings as rains intensify ‐ NEMA warns communities

NEMA Urges Preparedness as Flood Risks Increase Nationwide

With the onset of the rainy season, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) is warning communities across Nigeria to take proactive measures in anticipation of potential flooding. Director General Zubaida Umar emphasized the importance of clearing drainage channels, refraining from dumping waste in waterways, relocating from flood-prone areas, and paying attention to early warning advisories.

Umar delivered these recommendations during a meeting in Yobe State. She cited the 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction and Annual Flood Outlook, which indicates an increased risk of flooding across various regions of Nigeria, including areas in Yobe that have historically experienced displacement, loss of farmland, and infrastructure damage.

“Communities are encouraged to take these precautions seriously to avoid disaster,” Umar stated. She also urged parents to keep children away from floodwaters and areas prone to erosion during heavy rains.

Furthermore, Umar called upon traditional leaders, religious figures, youth organizations, and community volunteers to promote awareness and mobilize community efforts aimed at enhancing preparedness and resilience against flooding and other environmental hazards.
