Barcelona Sets Unwanted Record Following Loss to Atletico Madrid in Copa del Rey
Barcelona suffered a significant setback Thursday night, enduring a 4-0 defeat against Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-finals at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano Stadium.
The match saw goals from Eric García (own goal), Antoine Griezmann, Ademola Lookman, and Julian Alvarez, leading to a commanding victory for Atletico under coach Diego Simeone.
According to statistics provider OptaJose, this loss marks only the second time since the 2004-2005 season that Barcelona has conceded four goals by halftime. The only other occurrence was during the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals in August 2020, when the team was defeated 8-2 by Bayern Munich.
The two teams will meet again for the second leg of the Copa del Rey semi-finals in March.
