Court jails man, sentences two others for assaulting KAI officials in Lagos

Three Individuals Convicted for Assaulting Environmental Officials in Lagos
A Lagos Magistrate Court has convicted three individuals for assaulting officials of the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), commonly known as Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI), during a routine enforcement operation.
The defendants—Farouk Olori, 25, Ogundare Oluwatobiloba, 27, and Taoreed Alimi, 20—appeared before Magistrate Ariyo of the Special Offences Court, facing charges that included breach of peace, obstruction of lawful duty, and assault in violation of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.
Major Olaniyi Cole (retd.), Corps Marshal of LAGESC, announced the court’s decision at the agency’s headquarters in Bolade-Oshodi. He stated that the enforcement action was prompted by complaints from residents regarding environmental violations on Olowu Street in the Ipodo area. Illegal trading activities in the area created obstructions for both vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
According to Cole, the agency had previously issued abatement notices to encourage compliance. However, enforcement became necessary after these directives were disregarded. When officials moved in to clear the area, the suspects attacked them, resulting in one officer sustaining injuries that required treatment.
In his ruling, Magistrate Ariyo sentenced Olori and Alimi to one week in custody, with the option for community service. Oluwatobiloba received a one-year prison sentence, reflecting the evidence presented during the proceedings.
Cole characterized the verdict as a significant deterrent against violent resistance to lawful enforcement actions. He encouraged residents to comply with environmental regulations and to refrain from activities that could lead to legal repercussions.
The Corps Marshal emphasized that trading on road setbacks and other restricted areas, as well as public urination and defecation, constitute offenses under Lagos State environmental laws.
