Two Chinese Nationals Convicted of Illegal Mining in Lagos
LAGOS — The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has successfully secured the conviction of two Chinese nationals, Zhang Hong Lin and Gao Pei Hai, for conspiracy and illegal mining of solid minerals. The ruling was delivered by Justice Akintayo Aluko in the Federal High Court in Ikoyi on [insert date].
The defendants faced a five-count charge related to conspiracy and the unlawful possession of mineral resources intended for export without appropriate authority. During the proceedings, both Zhang and Gao pleaded guilty to the charges.
In the course of the trial, prosecution counsel H.U. Kofarnaisa presented the case’s details and submitted documentary evidence. Following this, Kofarnaisa urged the court to impose a conviction and sentence that reflected the seriousness of the offenses.
Justice Aluko subsequently found both defendants guilty on all counts, sentencing each to five years in prison for each charge. The court provided an option for a total fine of 50 million naira to cover all five counts. Additionally, the court ordered the forfeiture of the confiscated mineral resources to the Federal Government of Nigeria.
