Customs seizes 10,126 parcels of cannabis in Ogun

Nigeria Customs Service Intercepts Large Cannabis Shipment in Ogun State

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Ogun 1 Area Command reported the interception of 10,126 parcels of cannabis sativa, valued at N743,400,000, at various locations across Ogun State.

Area Comptroller Olukayode Afeni announced the drug seizure during a handover ceremony to Williams Ekundayo, Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in the Idiroko Special Area Command, on Tuesday.

Afeni described cannabis sativa, commonly referred to as marijuana, as a psychoactive substance that poses serious risks to consumers. He emphasized that the operation was not merely a seizure but part of a preventive strategy aimed at averting potential drug-related crises.

“Without this intervention, our society could face a surge in drug-related issues that would further strain our already limited healthcare and rehabilitation resources,” Afeni stated. “The increased availability of such substances could exacerbate health complications and overwhelm our psychiatric facilities.”

In his remarks, Ekundayo termed the seizure a significant achievement in the ongoing battle against drug abuse and trafficking. He commended the Customs officials involved and underscored the importance of collaboration between the NCS and NDLEA.

He further cautioned individuals engaged in drug trafficking, asserting, “If they persist, they will inevitably face arrest by law enforcement agencies.”
