Dispatch rider killed as two trucks battle for right of way in Lagos

A dispatch rider was killed in a collision involving two trucks in Ijesha, Lagos, on Saturday, August 22, 2026. The incident occurred as the drivers of the trucks vied for the right of way.
According to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the accident involved a FAW truck with the registration number T-30364LA and an Iveco truck identified by the registration number KSF 958 XV. The dispatch rider was reportedly struck after the two trucks collided in a struggle for the right of way.
Preliminary investigations conducted by the Eagle Response Team indicated that reckless driving by both truck drivers contributed to the crash. The impact of the collision forced the Iveco truck to hit the dispatch rider from behind, resulting in the rider’s death.
Following the accident, officers from the Nigeria Police Force at the Okota Division recovered the body of the deceased and transported it to a morgue for identification and subsequent procedures. LASEMA officials moved both trucks to a designated area off the main roadway to alleviate traffic disruptions.
Emergency responders, including LASEMA’s Eagle Response Team and police personnel, successfully concluded operations at the scene. The road was later declared safe for use by motorists and other road users.
Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, extended condolences to the family of the deceased and emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of all road users, particularly vulnerable individuals such as dispatch riders and pedestrians.
LASEMA urged commercial drivers to refrain from reckless driving, improper overtaking, and disputes over lane usage. The agency highlighted the importance of adhering to traffic regulations to prevent avoidable accidents and loss of life on Lagos roadways.
“Road safety remains a collective responsibility, and strict adherence to traffic regulations is essential,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated. LASEMA reiterated its commitment to prompt emergency response and collaboration with other agencies to enhance road safety.
