Police Arrest Ten in Connection with Cult Activities in Cross River State

Abini, Cross River State — The Cross River State Police Command has apprehended ten individuals suspected of being affiliated with the Axe Men Confraternity. The arrests took place early Saturday morning in Abini, located in the Biase Local Government Area.

The police operation, which occurred at approximately 5:15 a.m. on August 22, 2026, was conducted by the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), Sector 2. The operation was prompted by a petition submitted to the Commissioner of Police on July 29, 2026, detailing alleged cult activities within the community.

Those arrested include Jester Enyi, 25; Godwill Mansala, 22; Prosper Okey, 23; Emmanuel Uno, 26; Onyebuchi Eyong, 22; Elisha Emmanuel, 27; Christian Esu, 25; Daniel Uno, 23; Nelson Ibete, 23; and Roland Uno, 18.

During the operation, police recovered a locally made pistol, a battle axe, a dagger, a beret adorned with a secret cult emblem, a pair of police camouflage trousers, and a mobile cardigan.

According to a statement from Police Public Relations Officer ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, preliminary investigations suggest that the arrested individuals are linked to the Axe Men Confraternity.

Commissioner of Police Ajo Geoffrey Ordue praised the VCRU operatives for their effective use of intelligence in carrying out the operation. He stressed the importance of community policing and intelligence-led strategies in addressing criminal activities. Ordue encouraged residents to continue providing timely and reliable information to the police, emphasizing that community cooperation is vital for crime prevention.

The police have stated that efforts are ongoing to locate other suspects associated with this case. The arrested individuals will undergo due process and thorough investigation, with assurances that any found guilty will face legal consequences.
