Ekiti police reacts as two students die during post-convocation party

Police Investigate Fatal Incident at Ikere-Ekiti Hotel

IKERE-EKITI, Nigeria — The Commissioner of Police for Ekiti State, Falade Adegoroye Michael, has initiated a comprehensive investigation into a tragic incident at the Emirate Hotel that resulted in the deaths of a hotel staff member and two students from Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology (BOUESTI).

Preliminary findings indicate that the victims were attending a post-convocation celebration that took place after their graduation ceremony on April 18, 2026. The event continued into the early morning hours of the following day.

During the gathering, a dispute erupted between two unidentified students, escalating into a physical altercation. In the ensuing chaos, guests attempted to exit the hotel en masse, leading to a stampede that claimed three lives.

The deceased individuals have been transported to a local morgue for autopsy procedures. Commissioner Adegoroye expressed his condolences to the friends and families of the victims and urged the community to remain calm. He emphasized that the police are committed to thoroughly investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Sunday Abutu, confirmed that the investigation is ongoing.
