James Milner Retires from Professional Football at Age 40

Brighton midfielder James Milner has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 40. Milner concludes his 24-season career as the Premier League’s record appearance holder.

Debuting at just 16 years old with Leeds United in 2002, Milner racked up a remarkable 658 appearances throughout his career, representing clubs including Liverpool, Newcastle, Manchester City, Aston Villa, and briefly, Swindon Town.

In his statement, Milner expressed, “After 24 seasons in the Premier League, it feels like the right time to bring an end to my playing career.”

He reflected on his journey, noting, “From making my debut for Leeds United, who I supported growing up, at the age of 16 and becoming the Premier League’s youngest scorer, I could never have dreamed of the journey I’ve been on.”

Milner highlighted his recent experience with Brighton, where he played a key role in the club qualifying for European competition for the second time in its history.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to experience some unforgettable moments, from fighting for survival to winning trophies, playing in Europe, and representing my country,” he said. “But more than anything, it is the people and friendships I’ve made throughout my time in the game that I will cherish forever.”

The veteran player thanked his family for their support, stating, “None of this would have been possible without you.”

Milner concluded with a sense of gratitude, saying, “I leave the game with immense pride, gratitude, and memories that will stay with me for the rest of my life.” He added that football has given him more than he could have ever imagined.
