FCCPC Closes Abuja Supermarket Over Pricing Irregularities and Expired Products
The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has shut down First Place Supermarket in Guzape, Abuja, due to pricing inconsistencies and the sale of expired and potentially counterfeit products.
In a statement released on X, the FCCPC detailed that the enforcement action was initiated following multiple consumer complaints concerning irregular pricing practices at the supermarket.
The inspection revealed several violations of consumer protection laws, including discrepancies between shelf prices and checkout charges, as well as items displayed without price tags. Additionally, the commission discovered expired products for sale and improperly stored perishable goods. Suspected counterfeit items, including rice, were also confiscated during the operation.
As a result of these findings, the supermarket has been sealed, and further regulatory actions are pending. The FCCPC emphasized the importance of transparent pricing and the sale of safe products, reminding businesses of their obligations to treat consumers fairly.
The commission encourages the public to report any suspicious or deceptive practices they encounter. It assures that appropriate regulatory measures will be taken following a comprehensive review of the situation.
