FG concludes screening of Nigerians for evacuation from South Africa

The Federal Government has successfully completed the screening of Nigerians seeking evacuation from South Africa, marking a crucial step in facilitating their return home.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the conclusion of the screening process in a statement released on June 4. This exercise involved collaboration among various Nigerian and South African agencies.

Officials from the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria, South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation, the South African Police Service, and immigration authorities participated in the screening.

The primary aim of the exercise was to verify the identities and eligibility of Nigerians wishing to return to their home country amid heightened security concerns.

With the screening now finalized, authorities will determine the total number of Nigerians authorized for evacuation.

“The Government will subsequently finalize arrangements for the deployment of aircraft to transport the evacuees back to Nigeria,” the statement noted.

This planned evacuation occurs in the context of recent xenophobic attacks and increasing concerns regarding the safety of Nigerians and other African migrants residing in South Africa.

The Federal Government has reaffirmed its dedication to safeguarding the welfare of Nigerians abroad and ensuring the safe repatriation of those affected by the recent surge in anti-foreigner violence.
