Fijian Rugby Player Dies After Heatstroke Symptoms
FUKUOKA, Japan — Saimoni Vunilagi, a 26-year-old Fijian rugby player with the second-division team Kyushu KV, died on Friday after showing signs of severe heatstroke earlier in the week. According to the club, Vunilagi was hospitalized following a training session on Monday.
Temperatures in Fukuoka reached 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit) on the day of the incident. Vunilagi, who stood 196 centimeters (6 feet 5 inches) tall and weighed 117 kilograms (258 pounds), began his professional rugby career in 2023 after attending university in Japan.
The club expressed its sorrow in a statement, saying, “The players, staff, and all team associates are devastated by this sudden news. Although Saimoni had only recently joined Kyushu KV, his generous spirit and powerful style of play had raised high hopes for his contributions in the upcoming season. We humbly pray for the repose of his soul and extend our heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family.”
Japan has faced extreme heat this summer, with parts of the country reaching temperatures of 40°C (104°F) in recent weeks. According to the fire and disaster management agency, nearly 18,600 people were hospitalized for heat-related illnesses from July 20 to July 26, with 45 fatalities reported.
Historically, Japan experiences about 1,300 heat-related deaths annually, a figure that authorities are aiming to reduce by half by 2030. In recent weeks, three lions at a Tokyo zoo also died from suspected heatstroke, highlighting the broader impact of rising temperatures.
Scientists attribute the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme heat events to climate change, a concern that continues to grow as Japan recorded its highest-ever temperature of 41.8°C (107°F) in Isesaki, north of Tokyo, on August 5, 2025.
In response to escalating temperatures, authorities have altered the scheduling of several cultural and sporting events, including the recently concluded World Cosplay Summit in Nagoya.
